She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.

Hurricanes 'the perfect fit' for Pahokee's Regis

I'll never forget a guy like Micanor because for 20 minutes, while me, every other recruiter, coach and kid were sitting in our cars trying to cool down, stay out of the sun, this huge 17-year-old kid is just running all out, up and down a hill in full pads no less,'' said Larry Blustein, who has covered high school football recruiting in Florida since 1971.

``Everybody was just watching him. And when we all got out of our cars, all we could do was applaud. That's the kind of hunger a kid like Regis has. It's a deep passion to succeed.''

GOOD EXAMPLE

Blustein says Regis is another shining example of the superior talent that seems to grow on a yearly basis in a place known simply as The Muck, the surrounding area of Lake Okeechobee in Palm Beach County.

US shares lose ground

US SHARES lost ground overnight following a volatile week on Wall Street with investors anticipating fresh Federal Reserve rate cuts next week amid lingering economic uncertainty.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down a hefty 171.44 points or 1.38 per cent at a close of 12,207.17, capping a rollercoaster week for global markets. The tech-laden Nasdaq lost 34.72 points or 1.47 per cent to 2326.20 while the broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index closed down 21.46 points or 1.59 per cent at 1,330.61. "The market appeared tired after two days of strong rallies led to the first weekly advance this year for the S&P 500," said Al Goldman at AG Edwards. Mark Fightmaster at Schaeffer's Research said reports of major job cuts at investment giant Goldman Sachs roiled the market. "A spokesperson from Goldman noted that this is an annual process that is performance-related, not layoffs," he said.
